The PLH adult ESL classes help women to not only speak and understand English, but also to read and write. PLH creates a safe environment that encourages the women to practice oral language skills. The ability to communicate in English is critical for refugee and immigrant women to succeed in the workplace, college, and social settings, and to take an active role in their children’s education—not only helping with school work but also being better advocates for their children. Upon completion of ESL classes, students are better prepared to find employment and feel confident in day to day interactions with native English speakers.
Using a 0-4 point scale, adult students were assessed on their oral language proficiency in English.
